I very much share your misgivings around the whole commodification of girlhood -- it just feels like a rebrand of how I was made to feel wrong and bad for my body and my queerness and my interests and my feelings. It makes me so sad for teenage girls now because they don’t have rookiemag to tell them that they still matter haha!
This is an incredible piece of writing. The Shangri-La’s were a revelation to me and you capture so much about how I feel about them. Not that it matters but I alluded to them in a song I put out a few years ago.
